Bark Magazine names Seattle-based Trupanion “Best Place to Work”

Bark Magazine just put out its 2015 list of Best Places to Work list, and as you might expect, a company from dog friendly Seattle is at the top of the list.

With 400 employees that have 227 cats and dogs, Trupanion, the leading pet insurance provider in North America, was one of 3 companies that Bark recognized at the best places to work. (Etsy in Brooklyn and archer>malmo in Memphis were the other 2).

Bark judged its winners on the number of perks that they give employees and their dogs, and as I learned when I visited Trupanion at its Ballard headquarters in January 2014, they have a ton of them, which include:

  • free pet insurance
  • free dog walking service at work
  • a fenced area in the lobby for puppy playtime
  • a day off for pet bereavement
  • baby gates and tethers at every cubicle
  • a Pet Team that provides advice and reviews incidents
  • a fire safety plan that ensures people and their pets can be evacuated safely

“We’re very honored and proud to be named Bark’s Best Places to Work winner,” Trupanion’s Director of Public Relations Britta Gidican told me. “We hope more companies start to establish pet friendly office policies, and we’re happy to help them build safe policies so humans and pets can work together harmoniously like they do here!”

Trupanion’s commitment to pets starts at the top with its CEO Darryl Rawlings.

Before telling a room full of potential investors about why they should put their money in Trupanion, he asked everyone in the room to raise their hands if they have a pet. Darryl then told those investors who didn’t have their hands raised to leave and said “I’m sorry, but unfortunately you just won’t understand what we do.”

While he believes non-pet owners are perfectly fine people, they don’t truly believe the company’s purpose and what it’s here to do and won’t until they experience the love of a pet.

No wonder Trupanion’s workplace is so dog friendly.

Several other Washington-based companies were mentioned for their dog friendliness:

Amazon – Seattle
Assembly of Dog – Seattle
Bulkley Associates – Seattle
Carnation Corners – Carnation
Dogwise – Wenatchee
Harbors Home Health & Hospice – Hoquiam
Healthy Paws Pet Insurance – Bellevue
Jones Soda – Seattle
Paula’s Choice – Seattle
Possible – Seattle
Rover.com – Seattle
Synapse Product Development – Seattle
