The Yakima Herald-Republic reported yesterday that Yakima firefighters saved a dog suffering from smoke inhalation with an canine oxygen mask donated by local veterinary clinic.
On October 14, Yakima firefighters crews found a dog named Thor trapped inside a burning home. He’d been inside for about 30 minutes.
When they brought Thor outside, they saw he was suffering from smoke inhalation and heat exposure. The firefighters and Advanced Life Support medics revived him with a canine oxygen mask.
“Thanks to the donated oxygen mask and special training that the first responders had gone through to deal with pet emergencies, a short time later Thor was happily wagging his tail, much to the delight of his owner, Tim Besheone,” according to a news release from the City of Yakima.
A vet checked out Thor the next day and gave him a clean bill of health.
According to NBCRightNow.com, Thor’s dad was especially happy because “Thor serves as a constant reminder of Besheone’s wife, Jill, who passed away in 2009 after battling cancer.
The Yakima Valley Veterinary Clinic donated money to the East Valley Fire Department last year to buy canine oxygen masks. It also provided “free pet first aid training to area firefighters and other emergency personnel.”
Kudos to the veterinarians, firefighters, and first responders in Yakima. Thor probably wouldn’t be alive today if those groups hadn’t worked together.
