Earlier this week I wrote about a network of volunteers who found a dog lost in Snohomish County and reunited it with its family in Hawaii.
Today I learned that another group of volunteers saved a dog in Michigan shelter and transported it back to its home in Washington.
Bailey is a 9-year-old shepherd mix that ended up in Fort Branch County Animal Control in after police arrested her owner for a “minor offense” as the two traveled through Michigan.
Normally, the shelter would euthanized Bailey. Instead, Fort Branch County Animal Control worked with the local Humane Society to place her with the Lanawee Animal Shelter.

The family of Bailey’s owner, who also live in Washington, said they would keep her until her owner returned. However, they had no way to transport her from Michigan.
Staff at the Lanawee shelter worked with with the nonprofit Pilots N Paws to arrange 3 flights.
The first was supposed to take her from Michigan to Montana, but mechanical problems grounded the flight.
A volunteer stepped up to drive Bailey from Michigan to meet her second flight in Montana.
From there, the second flight took her from Montana to Eastern Washington. The third flight took her from Eastern Washington to the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County which helped her get to her owner’s family. Bailey will remain with them until her owner is released and returned to Washington.
Many thanks to the dozens of strangers who rescued Bailey from euthanization and reunited her with her owner.
Learning of their work to get Bailey home was a great way to start my weekend. I hope it does the same for you.
