The Seattle Humane Society Steps Up
The Seattle Humane Society announced today it is prepared to take in up to 300 pets (200 cats/100 dogs) from Texas animal rescue organizations following Hurricane Harvey.
Seattle Humane will take in these pets to relieve overcrowding and open up space for pets displaced by the storm. It will also take dogs in need of temporary housing while their owners reside in evacuation shelters.
The organization emphasized it will only take pets already in Texas shelters before Hurricane Harvey hit Southeast Texas last weekend. It will not take in pets separated from their owners in the disaster.

Wings of Rescue will transport shelter pets from Texas to Boeing Field on Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 2:45 pm.
Seattle Humane staff and volunteers, along with several other local shelters, will be waiting to receive the animals.
The Seattle Humane team will transport pets to its facility in Bellevue and find permanent homes for them.
More Flights Coming
This is the first of several expected flights to Seattle to help shelters that house displaced pets outside of Houston.
“With the natural disaster in Houston, Seattle Humane is proud to be part of a national effort to help with moving animals out of the Houston area that are currently at shelters,” states Seattle Humane CEO David Loewe. “This will make the space needed for the short term housing of strays and the immensely important task of reunification of pets with their families.”
Seattle Humane is organizing an emergency foster care orientation for prospective volunteers who can temporarily house pets currently in its care to create more space for animals flying in from Texas. Interested in learning more? Please email emergencyfoster@seattlehumane.org.
We are dog lovers. We would love either to foster or adopt. Our golden Barkley passed last Nov. We are now ready to get another dog.

Thank you! If you look at the end of the post you’ll see an email address that people should use to tell Seattle Humane you’d like to foster a dog.
the email address given keeps coming back as an error…
Hmmm. It worked for me. Here’s the message I got:
Hello and thank you!
Seattle Humane is awaiting news about how many pets are coming to us on the Aug. 30 transfer, but this is the first flight of many. This email box is set up to communicate with prospective volunteers interested in primarily fostering a pet, but we can also use help with animal care at the shelter.
Please know that Seattle Humane is helping to clear the shelters in the Houston/San Antonio area of animals already available for adoption so that local shelters can take in pets displaced by Hurricane Harvey. We are not transferring in lost or stray pets from the storm, as Texas shelters will be working to reunite pets with their owners.
As we assess our need for foster care, we are considering an emergency foster orientation. Please stay tuned for this information.
