Last Sunday, a house fire in Sedro Wooley completely destroyed the home of a single mom and her daughter. Kami Dodd and her daughter Nona lost every possession they had except the clothes they were wearing.
Unfortunately, their dog Maude, who was Nona’s best friend, was trapped inside the house and didn’t survive.
Seeing how devastated Nona was over the loss of her dog, the firefighters that responded to the fire – Whatcom County Fire District 18 – made a incredibly kind gesture last night.
Here’s how they described it on their Facebook page:
“Last night, the members of our department decided we needed to visit Nona, the little girl who lost her dog and everything she owns in the house fire, to let her know that we are there for her. We bought her the book “Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls 2”, a book about strong inspirational women that shows young girls that they have the
ability to do anything in life. We signed it and delivered it to her in the Engine, Ambulance, Initial Attack, and Battalion Vehicle with all of our emergency lights on. Nona and Kami are doing better than a few days ago, but they still need financial security for what is ahead of them. Please, if you can, we ask that you donate to their Go Fund Me page (link below)! Nona, you are family, and your firefighters are there for you day or night, whenever you need us and in any way that you need us!”
The firefighters also put this profound inscription in Nona’s book:
“The South Lake Whatcom Fire Department would like to express our deepest condolences for the loss of your house and your best friend Maude. We did everything we could to try and save her. As you grow older you will find that home is wherever your family makes it, and right now your family is doing everything they can to make it where you are. You are so lucky to have such a great family.
We got you this book because we know that you are growing up to be a strong caring girl just like all the great women in it! If there is anything we can do to make this time easier for you, do not hesitate to ask!”
If you can, please go to the Kami and Nona House Fire Fund on Go Fund Me to make a donation to help Kami and Nona rebuild their lives. I understand things are tight for lots of people right now, but this family lost literally everything they had, so please consider making a small donation to help them out.
And after you do that, go to the Whatcom County Fire District 18 Facebook page to thank the firefighters who are trying to help Nona during this incredibly devastating and challenging time in her life.
