Q13 reported yesterday that a 2-year-old German Shepherd named Rex is being hailed as a
hero after protecting a Des Moines teenager from two home invaders last Wednesday.
As Javier Mercado hid in a closet, Rex confronted the burglars that broke into the house.
“I started hearing barking, a lot of barking, and then one of the guys screamed, ‘The dog bit me, the dog bit me!‘” Javier told Q13.
He then heard multiple gunshots.
When officers arrived they found Rex with gunshot wounds to his neck, leg, and knee.
They rushed him to Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners in Renton where he is recovering after surgery.
Within one day, people contributed over $30,000 to a GoFundMe page set up to raise $10,000 to help the family pay for Rex’s surgery and hospital stay.
Get well soon, Rex!
