AM Northwest in Portland did a great story about a woman from Battle Ground, WA who started a charity to provide service dogs to veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Northwest Battle Buddies gives service dogs to military veterans with post traumatic stress disorder.
At dog trainer for about 20 years, Shannon Walker created Northwest Battle Buddies after she trained a dog for a woman who had contemplated suicide and noticed the dog provided her with a safe haven.
So when a veteran approached Walker about training his dog, she realized “an obedient and watchful dog could have the same impact on a veteran dealing with emotional and psychological scars.”
It costs about $10,000 to train one dog and the process takes 3-4 months. Ms. Walker gets her dogs from shelter dogs and private donors.
Here is the recent interview from AM Northwest with this amazing woman.
