The Oregon Humane Society rescued a 3-year-old yellow Labrador Retriever that fell 150 feet into the Columbia Gorge while on
a Christmas Day hike with its person.
David Schelske and his dog Sandy were hiking near Eagle Creek when something startled Sandy, causing her to bolt and snap her leash. As she ran she fell down a cliff to a ledge about 70 feet from the bottom of the gorge.
Mr. Schelske contacted the OHS Technical Animal Rescue Team for help, and they arrived about 7 PM. A person on their team repelled down to Sandy and got a harness on her. Then the rest of the team hoisted both of them back up to the trail.
Sandy only suffered minor injuries and was able to walk back under her own power.
Mr. Schelske said the OHS Technical Rescue Team “is an amazing, dedicated group of people. I wish I could give them all a big hug.”
Here’s the video from OHS as Sandy was hoisted off the ledge and back onto the trail. Nice work OHS!
