The Washington Department of Corrections recently posted this video about its fantastic Prison Pet Partnership program at the Washington Corrections Center for Women in Gig Harbor.
Started over 35 years ago, this program was the first in Washington “to (bring) homeless animals into prisons for inmates to train to adopt out as pets or service animals for people with disabilities. ” It was expanded in 1996 to include grooming and boarding services.
All Washington prisons operate some kind of animal training or adoption program. If you’re looking to adopt a dog, you can find all their listings and contract information here.
