Washington man arrested for blowing up his dog will now face animal cruelty charges

KOIN in Portland reported about an hour ago that a Stevenson, WA man arrested for allegedly blowing up his dog will now face animal cruelty charges despite prosecutors saying yesterday that they couldn't file those charges.

They now believe they can prove the dog, a Labrador retriever named Cabella, suffered before she was killed.

Christopher Dillingham was arrested Sunday morning by Skamania County deputies after they received several reports of a loud explosion at his home about 4 AM.

KOIN obtained documents that gives a clearer picture of what happened on Sunday.Christopher Dillingham, left, is accused of blowing up his Labrador retriever named Cabella with an explosive device. Photos from KOIN.com.

After the deputies arrived Dillingham told them that “the world is going to end” because of a nuclear strike and that he was preparing for "the Rapture."

Cabella was given to Dillingham by his ex-girlfriend, and he said he killed her because "she put the devil in it."

KOIN said that Dillingham allegedly "made the explosive device on his home work bench using black powder from fireworks." He owns a fireworks stand called Thundershack Fireworks. The website has been taken down but the Facebook page is still online.

Dillingham then allegedly "strapped it around the dog’s neck and fed the dog treats to keep it from trying to wriggle out of the bomb."

Dillingham has long arrest history dating back to September 1993, when he was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle in Oregon. He was arrested in 1998 for drunken driving, and in 2007 and 2009 on assault charges in Washington.

He already faces charges of second-degree malicious mischief, reckless endangerment and possession of explosive devices. Animal cruelty is a Class C felony in Washington with a maximum penalty of 5 years. He's being held on $500,000 bail.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone tries to defend his actions by claiming he was mentally unstable. As I'm not a lawyer or a psychologist, I can't opine as to Dillingham's mental state.

All I can say is that the person who cruelly killed Cabella belongs in prison for as long as possible and should be prohibited from ever owning an animal.

Rest in Cabella. You've inspired a lot of people to fight on your behalf.
